Zones and Regions

which places to visit while on Kruger National Park tour

KNP offers a different kind of regions and you can select the type of experience you want. It is divided into six ecosystems – baobab sandveld, Lebombo knobthorn-marula bushveld, mixed acacia thicket, combretun-silver clusterleaf, woodland on granite and riverine forest.

Kruger Park Central Region

Central Region is only 30% of the park’s surface area but it supports nearly half the park’s lion population as well as numbers of leopard, hyena and cheetah. Sweet grasses and abundant browsing trees found in this area supports large groups of antelope, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest. This makes it a perfect place for the 60 pride of lions that choose the central region for their home.

Kruger's Far North Region

The ecozones in this part are noticeably different from the other habitats. It is fascinating part of the park. Here you can sightings rare birdlife and major areas of sand formed by river floodplains, combined with sandstone formations of the Mozambique coastal plain. A site on the river bank provides hours of splendid bird viewing. You can observe sand frog, a collection of bats, the nocturnal bushpig and the rare Sharpe’s grysbok, monkeys, packs of endangered wild dog and more. The solitude of the sandstone hills, just west of Punda Maria, is the only place where you can see the Natal red hare and dassie or yellow-spotted hyrax. It’s a fascinating place to visit!

The Northern Kruger Park Region

Five rivers forge their way across this great expanse of hot dryness in this region. Along riverbanks grow trees distinctly different from the mopane. That is the nyala, the sycamore fig, the tamboti and the tall apple leaf. The Rivers here contain 60% of the Kruger Park’s hippo population and bird life. There are plenty of bushpigs and on most of the riverbanks. You can see sizeable herds of elephant, buffalo, bushbuck, impala and kudu gathering near the water supplies. There are more than 9000 elephants in KNP.

The Southern Kruger Park Region

This region is a host of the white rhinos and trees rarely found in other parts of the park, such as the Cape chestnut, coral tree and lavender fever-berry. They are typically surrounded by rock figs and form ideal locations for rock dassies or hyrax, baboon klipspringer and leopard. The combretum woodlands in this region, attract herds of kudu, impala, giraffe, white rhino, buffalo, zebra and elephant. The absence of lions in this part of the park makes way for the cheetah and wild dog.

7-10 Day Tour and Safari to Kruger Park and Eswatini-Swaziland via Panorama Route

This popular tourist destination is situated within the Drakensberg mountains to the west of Kruger Park. Scenic tours to this region include some spectacular viewpoints, waterfalls and forest drives including  Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window, The Three Rondavels, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Pilgrims Rest, Berlin and Lisbon waterfalls

  • Blyde River Canyon extends for about 20 kilometers from Bourke’s Luck Potholes to Swadini, A Forever Resort, which is landlocked by the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve and nestled amongst the Drakensberg Peaks on the banks of the Blyde River.  The Three Rondavels – also known as the Three Sisters, they serve as reminders of the native hut housing structures called rondavels. ( round houses )
  • God’s Window is a look-out at the edge of the escarpment. It is located in a cleft which is “framed” by the mountain cliffs and on a clear day provides a wonderful view looking across the plantations towards Kruger Park. There are several observation areas with railings and steps leading to the rain forest. Visitors to this venue will remember the aroma of mountain herbs.

Waterfalls are most impressive in the rainy season. We usually include Lisbon Falls and/or Berlin Falls and/or Macmac Falls.

Game Drives

No matter if you prefer off-road 4×4 or luxury vehicle ride, game drives are what the Kruger National Park is all about. Depending on the duration of your safari, a visit usually includes morning, afternoon and evening game drives. Safaris in the park are led by trained and experienced safari guides who are knowledgeable about the wildlife and ecosystems and readily share information with visitors. They know where to look for specific animals and choose game viewing routes. That increase the likelihood of successfully spotting park’s diverse wildlife species.

If you book a safari or a private game lodge, regular game drives with an experienced ranger will be part of your trip.  Most of the rest camps provide early morning, mid-morning, sunset game drives and night drives. Most game drives last around 3 hours.

Bush Walks

If you are adventurous on your KNP tour you can book a Bush Walks. It is the most heart-stopping excitement of tracking rhino, elephant and lion on foot through the wild. That is an incredible way to learn about the fragility of the ecosystems of the Park. You can see the smaller animals, insects and plants that tend to be ignored on fast-paced game drives. Bush walks usually take about four hours and stops are made to allow replenishment. During the walking tour, you are guarded by armed game rangers. It’s advisable to take snacks, sunscreen and repellents. Most of the camps offer afternoon and morning walks.
